Shooting in the Dark

Yesterday I was Nashville attending a workshop from the amazing photographer Jeff Newsom. I’ve been following his work for years, so it was rather crazy to be sitting in a room with him, 12 other photographers, and the ability to ask him anything under the sun. It was totally humbling and inspiring and I’m still processing so much of what went down. Here a few highlights from the day…

I love photographing siblings that are close in age. Their stares, their uncanny resemblances, their bond, it’s amazing and sweet. I’ve been photographing Theo (in yellow) since he was a newborn, and Emmett is a younger classmate at Sylvia’s school. Love these two, happy Mother’s Day to the lucky grandparents that will be receiving portraits of these two!

Oh my, these are some beautiful sisters I had the lucky privilege to photograph last week. I have photographed these two before, last spring to be exact, but every time I see them I’m amazed at their gorgeousness (fabulousness?). It’s almost like I’m not working with I document them, it’s that easy. Getting little Catalina to look at me and smile, well, that’s a bit of a challenge. But if she’s not smiling, she’s giving us those huge pouty lips and I think that’s the most adorable thing I’ve seen in a while.
Thanks Tiffany, can’t wait to show you the rest!

Seth and Laura were wed last Friday, April 13, at the quaint and gorgeous Little Flower Catholic Church. It was round so guests felt very much a part of the ceremony, which was sweet and thoughtful. Though it rained from the ceremony on (therefore pretty much ruining our chances at outside day portraits), we made do by stopping briefly at the good ‘ol Muny. This couple is so sweet and down to earth, making a warm and welcoming ceremony and reception. Their families were so kind and their friends obviously love them, it was such a great night. The reception was at the Contemporary Art Museum, which had an exquisit installation behind the dining area. It was breathtaking and made for an awesome backdrop to the dance floor! Congrats Seth & Laura, it was a pleasure working with you both!

John, brother of this awesome dude, met up with us on Sunday to get an LA-ready portfolio together. This is the second time I’ve photographed people who are wanting to bring the midwest to LA and dominate!
Anyhow, he has a great personality and was a total natural behind camera. He’s an aspiring model, actor, and a performing comedian. I am so gonna check his local stuff out, he is hilarious! Knock ‘em dead in LA, John!

Janassa and Jason are a lively and adventurous couple. They love to travel and Jason was a pilot for many years, and is still very involved in the field. So what better a location to shoot their engagement session than at the local small airport?!
Of course the weather had to tease us all day, so the session was extremely last minute. But you don’t know how excited I am that it all worked out. If we would have had to shoot on the weekend, the place would’ve been full of people and cars everywhere. Instead, the place was virtually empty, leaving us a blank and beautiful setting.
This has got to be my favorite engagement shoot I’ve ever done or been a part of. Not only were Janassa & Jason a sweet and loving couple, but there were relaxed and super involved in the whole process.
Congrats you two, can’t wait for the 2 day ceremony celebration this fall!

Janeane and I share a very close friend, so when Fredo creatively proposed to her, I was so excited! They are such a great fit, he’s a stand-up individual. And though no one is invited to their out of state nuptials, I can’t wait for the reception next spring. Congrats you two!
